A Superman Cape

H has been asking for a Superman cape for a while now. The poor kid has been wearing my apron as a cape, running around the house saying “I’m a SUPERMAN! I’m flying!” I still don’t know where he learned about Superman. Maybe all boys are born knowing about him.

I had some extra energy last week (but not much), and I had to hem some curtains anyway so I looked up some cape tutorials/patterns online. I went with the tutorial from The Long Thread because it was free, looked simple enough, and I liked the way the fold over collar looked.

The pattern calls for a yard each of two coordinating fabrics. I thought for sure I’d have some one yard cuts of manly solids in my fabric stash but no. All I had was pink. I didn’t want to waddle around the fabric store in my current state, 39-ish weeks pregnant, and besides, I have plenty of perfectly good fabric taking up precious room in my house.

I picked out some prints that kind of matched. Then I cut everything out according to the measurements and got to sewing. This cape went together so fast. I think it took about an hour for everything, including the cutting and the applique. It was so quick and easy I decided to whip up another one for H’s friend.

B's cape

H’s friend loves kitties, so he got the kitty fabric I’ve been hoarding for the last 10 years. I didn’t do such a great job with the “B”. Some letters are easier to freehand than others!

  1. It’s Batman for Sam–maybe all boys are assigned a Superhero at birth?

  2. You know, that might be true Annika. I have one Batman brother and one Superman brother. I just try not to take sides…..

  3. Adorable capes!! I may need to whip 2 up myself. I have a Superman kid too (he is 2 and we haven’t watched superman since he was born). I have another kid who is a spiderman kid. Again, not sure where it comes from.

  4. awesome capes. My daughter skates with 2 boys (twins) who do their freestyle routines to the batman theme and the spiderman theme. Not sure how they decided who got which!

  5. he looks so very excited!! Beautiful capes

  6. Lucy’s in love with Captain Hammer and Doctor Horrible, but she will happily sit and watch Justice League cartoons with Robb. Good times.

I think she may need a cape. :)

  7. I am totally making one for my little guy too!!! Love it!

  8. My son’s current obsession is Darth Vader (or as he was calling him before, Dartha Vader), so I can see making one of these in all black in time for Halloween.

    I LOVE YOUR CREATIONS!

  9. OMG SO CUTE!

  10. I’ll make myself an A and wear it around work!

Those are supercute. Oh, and all boys are born with innate knowledge of very specific things, like guns, superman, and boogers.

  11. Those are awesome! My brother wore a tea towel tied around his neck when he was 4 (he was Superman). My parents even let him up on the roof wearing it when we were building the cottage! I would be afraid that would be the time that he would actually attempt to fly, but she says that never even crossed her mind.

  12. We made two of these at our house this weekend. They were a HUGE hit! Thanks for the great idea and the fan-tabulous link! I *heart* this blog!

  13. Oh! So very adorable! Super “H” looks awesome in his “flying” glasses and cape. My brother used to do this and turn his hands under just like that!
