Summer’s End

Wow, it’s the end of August already! We’ve had a nice summer but I won’t be sad to see it go. I’m definitely a cool weather person. Here are some things I’ve made recently that celebrate the return of fall.

maine morning mitts

I wanted to enter these fingerless gloves in the fair but I couldn’t stay awake long enough to finish them before the deadline. I’ve tried a few different fingerless glove patterns over the years and this pattern is my favorite. It’s a nice use of handspun too. I used about 2/3 of a skein for these gloves.

Details:

Pattern: Maine Morning Mitts. It’s a free pattern!
Yarn: My handspun- Zen String superwash merino in “Makedah”, chunky weight
Needles: I’m pretty sure I used a size 9
Mods: I knit the cuffs a little longer and picked up a few extra stitches for the thumb. I was smart enough to read what people were saying about the pattern on Ravelry before I started it and they were saying the thumbs were too tight. I picked up two extra stitches. The thumbs are perfect now.

brown sugar cookies

Aaaaah, baking. I love baking. These cookies are a family favorite, a recipe I stumbled across one day when i was looking for something to bake to use up the 3 bags of brown sugar I found in the pantry. Don’t be alarmed– this recipe doesn’t call for 3 bags of brown sugar. It does have a lot of sugar though. And butter. Delicious butter. So although these are a family favorite I don’t bake them very often. If you make them I suggest making a double batch because they will be inhaled in minutes.

Brown Sugar Cookies

I entered these cookies in the fair this year. I’m excited to see how they measure up to the other baked goods this year. I saw so many yummy things when I dropped these off for judging.

new stuffs

Here’s a cool weather project I’ve had in the back of my mind for a while. I’m putting together some fun spinning kits. The kits will include 1 oz portions of 4 different colors of hand dyed fiber. The kits I’m putting together now are Shetland wool which is nice to spin and very beginner friendly. Eventually I want to offer the kits in all different kinds of fiber. I dyed a TON of fiber today. If the rest of my week goes smoothly they should be ready to go by the weekend.

  1. I am going to be all over that like a bee to honey…. how exciting! is it going to be like the booty club but for fiberz???

  2. I LOVE your mitts!!! I love knitting mitts. They are some of the only things I’ve been able to finish lately! And they are a heck a useful. Your handspun is lovely.

I hope you win something for those cookies because they look super yummy. Brown sugar + butter you can never lose :)

  3. I am so making those cookies this weekend. Of course, neither myself nor the Cookie Monster, uh, husband, needs them. But I’m sure they’ll be good for morale during what looks to be a rainy weekend.
