Handmade Holidays- The Conclusion

Ok, here are my last two handmade gifts!

sugarplum cowl

I saw the pattern for this cowl on Allegra’s blog and knew it would be perfect for my mom. She owns about as many coats and jackets as I do skeins of yarn. She’s always looking for cute scarves to accessorize with. I’ve knit her dozens of scarves over the years so this cowl was a welcomed change.

Details:

Pattern: Sugar Plum Cowl by Allegra Wermuth
Yarn: Noro Silk Garden #204, 1 1/4 skeins
Needles: Addi Turbos, size 6 US
Mods: None, but I wish I would have done a sewn bind off for a more stretchy finished edge. Luckily my mom doesn’t have a huge head like I do, so I think it will be fine.
Ravel it!

owl hat

Last Christmas I knit my sister a matching hat and scarf out of brightly dyed bulky weight yarn. She loved them and wore them all the time. This Fall she started working with the birds of prey at the zoo. She told me she could no longer wear her hat to the zoo because the owls were scared of it. Who knew owls were so particular about knitwear? I told her I’d knit her a more owl friendly hat for Christmas. On a whim I searched Ravelry for “owl hat” and came up with this pattern.

Details:

Pattern: Owl Hat by Ruthie Nussbaum
Yarn: Peace Fleece Worsted, not even a full skein
Needles: Size 7 US
Mods: I did a 3-row stripe sequence before and after the owl cable to make them stand out a bit more.
Ravel it!

The owl cable is really easy to work. I’d like to knit my sister more owlish things. I love these owl knee socks!

So there you have it. If you want to know how I get so much knitting done with a 10 month old I will tell you my secret. I go to bed when he does and I sit in bed next to him and knit. My house is not always clean and the laundry is not always done but we’re both pretty happy with the arrangement.

seattle snow 2008

This was the view from my front porch on Saturday night. We got about a foot of snow. I’m glad that H’s first Christmas will be snowy. Who knows when he’ll see this much snow again.
