i'm spinning again!

I spun this yarn just days before H was born. I was 2 weeks overdue and since the spicy food and sex wasn’t working I thought I’d try spinning. It is not comfortable to spin when you are 42 weeks pregnant. Not for the mom or baby. Well, the spinning didn’t produce a baby, but it did produce this pretty 8 oz skein of bulky yarn.

simple yet effective shawl

A few weeks ago my grandma mentioned that she needed a scarf or something to wrap around her head while she walked the dog. I thought about this skein of handspun and wondered if a small-ish shawl would do the trick. I cast on for the Simple Yet Effective Shawl and after a few hours I had almost half a shawl. I emailed my grandma to tell her I was working on something for her. I told her it was sort of a triangular scarf that she could pull up over her head if she wanted to. Her reply was this- “I do not want an Old Granny Shawl.” Um…

I kept knitting. It wasn’t an Old Granny Shawl at all. It was Hip Granny Shawl. It wasn’t even necessarily a Granny Shawl. It was just a pretty shawl. Too pretty to give up on. I thought I could find someone else to give it to, or better yet keep it. I finished it, blocked it, and decided to mail it to my grandma anyway. I have a feeling she’ll like it and if she doesn’t, well my mom is already plotting to steal it from her.

Details:

Fiber- Hello Yarn BFL in “Bruised”, 8 oz
Spun- Bulky 2-ply on my little Babe Wheel.
Pattern- Simple Yet Effective Shawl
Needles- size 13 circs. I would have used 11’s but they are MIA.
Time- Cast on 12/15. Cast off 12/18.
Mods- None, except I ran a bit short of yarn and used some leftover Misti Alpaca in dark brown. I like the dark, solid color along the edges.
Ravel it.

I should have measured it after I blocked it. It was not humongous. The point came down to the middle of my back, I think. It’s really just big enough to wrap around your head and toss the ends in back. I tucked it inside one of my prettiest gift bags and mailed it to my grandma on Saturday. Eek! I hope it gets there in time for Christmas.

  1. lovely!

  2. I’d plot to steal it from her as well!!!

I got my Figgy Pudding today, its gorgeous:)

  3. I am really enjoying the parade of knitterly gifts and bags you are doing. It totally makes me feel bad that I didnt’ get ANY christmas knitting done. I would totally spin up yarn for people…but the people I have to give gifts to are non-knitters! The shame of it all. I can’t wait to see what other items you have up your sleeve. I’ve loved them all!
