Bootaversary

Well, I managed to have a sock club for a year without screwing things up too badly. Want to see what surprises the next year will have? New memberships will be available on Sunday, June 15th, 10 am (pacific time). June packages are shipping sometime next week. Just a reminder, if you grab a spot on Sunday your first package will ship in July. I have something really fun planned for July!

Along with your July packages there will be a treasure hunt. One of the yarn tags will have a secret word on the back. If you get this tag, email me the secret word and I’ll send you your treasure. The treasure will be awesome. I don’t want to give too much away, but it will feature a Punky Purls project bag stuffed to the brim with all kinds of goodies. The treasure hunt winner is selected at random. I tag the yarn and wrap in in tissue paper as it dries. We start stuffing envelopes a few days before they ship out, so I’d have no idea which package held the winning tag. If the treasure hunt is successful I’ll do one every 3 months. If you want to promote your etsy shop (or other crafty venue) in the treasure hunt contact me before July 15th. If you send me a something to include in the bag I’ll link to you and extol your crafty virtues :).

Teething is pretty crappy. This has been a rough week for me. How many teeth do kids get anyway? 20 or so? Sigh. I’ve been reading up on teething. Every kid is different when it comes to cutting teeth. My kid has decided that he no longer needs to nap for more than 20 minutes here and there. He also decided that he might as well just stay up until 10:30 or so every night. And the chomping on my nipples… there could not be a worse form of torture. Those little teeth are SHARP! They aren’t even full teeth yet, just jagged little nubs. Here are some teething remedies I’ve tried in the last week:

Amber Teething Necklace. Doesn’t work, but looks awfully cute.

Gum-omile oil. Really helps a lot, but makes him sputter and cry when I apply it. I tasted it. It’s very mild. I think he will appreciate it when he’s a bit older and used to flavors other than breast milk. I got my Gum-omile at Super Supplements.

Hyland’s Teething Tablets. I think these work. He seems to calm down after a dose.

Hyland’s Teething Gel. Tried this today for the first time. He hated it and gave me a dirty look. I tasted it- it doesn’t have a flavor. Maybe he just wants me to stop messing with him. Anyway, it can be dosed more frequently than the tablets. I didn’t notice an effect, but I only tried it once.

Infant’s Tylenol. Yep. It works, and it works better than any of the stuff listed above. The key is to give a dose before the crying/screaming starts. The last couple days I’ve given a dose in the morning and at bedtime and that was it. He tolerated the taste much better than any of the other stuff.

As you can imagine, knitting has been slow. I’m glad I started Lizard Ridge. I’ve memorized the pattern and I’m able to knit a few rows here and there when H decides to nap.

I’ll be listing more DK weight BFL in my etsy shop over the weekend. I love how it takes the dyes. So pretty! I’ve queued up a bunch of DK weight patterns on Ravelry. As soon as I have some spare time I’m planning on casting on for these (ravelry link) (here’s the original link).
What’s your favorite DK weight pattern? Link to it here and I’ll pick someone at random to win a free skein!

  1. I’m convinced that the amber is more to make mom feel better - and definitely via the cute factor!

Motrin is my weapon of choice now.. my pedi said we can use it after 3 months, some say 6… but it’s a godsend. Tylenol just doesn’t quite cut it most of the time we’ve REALLY needed to use something - plus motrin tastes WAY better!

I can’t believe H is teething already.. Odin just cut his first (at 10.5 months) a few weeks ago! Then again, my first kid cut his first at about 4 months and had a whole mouthful by 9 months (and then he cut his “two year” molars, so he had a full set of 20 by 14 months!)

  2. Hylands teeth tablets saved our lives!!!!

  3. Here’s DK link
    http://christine.typepad.com/knitting/easy-drop-stitch-scarf-pa.html

  4. The only thing that worked for all 4 of my kids was the “teething cocktail” which was- 1. a half-dose of Dye-free Motrin for long-term relief, 2. Hylands tabs for immediate emotional relief, and 3. Oragel for local gum pain. Sometimes I’d have to throw in a washcloth-covered ice cube or frozen peach slice in one of those mesh feeder things. I wish you lots of luck. and sleep. I’m so sorry, I hate teething!

  5. I am huge fan of Kate Gilbert’s peapod set. It’s super cute.

  6. All of my kids did great with the Hylands Teething Tablets. None of them would take the tylenol. And I tried….man oh man did I try. I wanted to give the little guys some relief and me some rest! But the minute that stuff would hit their tongues they would puke ALL over me. It was gross. I’m glad your little guy is being more cooperative than mine were :) And the nubs are sharper than the teeth when they come all the way up. Nursing will be easy again soon :)

Favrite DK pattern huh? Well my favorite that I’ve made is my retro cloche hat http://www.ravelry.com/patterns/library/retro-cloche-hat

But my favorite looking dk project that I haven’t gotten to is Jared of Brooklyn Tweed’s Swallowtail shawl done in DK weight yarn. http://www.ravelry.com/projects/brooklyntweed/swallowtail-shawl-2

One of these days I’ll make one. I love it more than the lace versions!!!

  7. Hey Georgia, we had great success with a homeopathic teething powder by Weleda that you rub onto bubs’ gums with your finger. Worked great for our little guy. It’s a New Zealand company so you might not be able to get it there. But if you would like to give it a try, I would be more than happy to send some over for sweet baby H.

  8. Currently knitting this lovely toy http://www.ravelry.com/patterns/library/elijah

  9. I think this http://www.ravelry.com/patterns/library/anouk knitted in all the same of your yarn would be totally super-cute!

  10. I’d probably make these first with your DK weight yarn. I love wrist warmers!

  11. Good luck with the teething….

I am working on a sweater; it’s nearly killed me. I’m longing to knit socks, and this is where I’d start:

  12. We’re going through teething right now too so I can sympathize! I can’t wait to cast on http://www.ravelry.com/patterns/library/starsky-jr

for my daughter, when I can find time :)

  13. Thuja works pretty good for DK. My favorite is this one I knit up http://www.ravelry.com/projects/Sockaholic/wild-oak-socks
DK weight is instant gratification for socks. :)

  14. I love these little bags knit out of DK weight. http://www.ravelry.com/patterns/library/soft-drawstring-pouch

  15. Got to be the baby surprise jacket. Oh and a link….
    http://www.ravelry.com/patterns/library/baby-surprise-jacket

  16. Tylenol works for us, but my munchkin gets a little sugar rush off of it, so it makes him a wee bit hyper.
I can relate to chomped nipples…my little guy has bit down in his sleep, it’s a very rude way to wake up!
My favourite DK weight item has to be Daisy, a cardigan with options. It’s on knitty here: http://www.knitty.com/ISSUEsummer03/PATTdaisy.html
Almost all of my friends have gotten one for their babies!

  17. My favorite DK-weight patterns are the Mahayana Flying Gloves (which you’ve already linked to–although I made mine in fingering weight yarn), and the Baby Bell Bottoms:
    http://www.ravelry.com/patterns/library/baby-bell-bottoms

Great idea with the Treasure Hunt! Sounds so fun.

  18. First off, Happy Booty-versary!
Yay for the secret treasure! That’s a great idea - extra stuff is always a good time.

I am currently doing a pair of Broadripples with some KP Telemark. I bought two skeins on clearance to help me get the spend 50$ free shipping and didn’t know what to do with it. Although it is sport yarn, it knits up similar to DK on size 4 needles. Yarn Pirate DK would look great as a pair of Broadripples. Too bad I’ve already spent my yarn budget for June on a skein of Permanent Mistake - yay!

  19. Teething tablets rock! My, now four year old, used to ask for them by name when he was 2. LOL I have to hide them now or the 3 and 4 year old will try to eat them all. LOL

  20. Hmm, DK weight. I’m in the midst of making the Brompton cardigan, by Alice Bell, using Rowan Felted Tweed — have slowed down a bit because the dog does not like to let me spread it out to work on the button band without jumping all over it….but I love the pattern, and the basketweave neckline, button band and bottom edge look lovely.

  21. Oh, very pretty! My favorite DK pattern so far is Wendy’s Southwestern Socks http://www.ravelry.com/patterns/library/southwestern-socks

They are so easy and fast!

  22. I see you have plenty of advice on the teething remedies, so I will forego adding my two cents there, but as for the chomping on your poor nipples I have one thing to add. My doctor claimed that pulling my little darling off as soon as she did it, and saying, “No!” in a sharp voice would soon stop her, but as she teethed at 4 months, I didn’t really think she would learn it. However, all it took was one time of her clamping down when I was way sore anyway, falling asleep and unprepared. I accidentally screamed, scared her, she wailed her little head off. I got her settled down and put her back on to nurse. She looked up at me, thought for a second, and bit down. I did exactly as the doctor said. She cried, of course, but that was the last time she ever tried it.
Even at 4 months, they are smarter than we give them credit for.
I guess if a puppy can learn what “no” means, so can a baby!
    Good luck.

  23. You could always break out the scotch and rub it on his gums ;)

  24. Poor H and Mommy! My older ds (now 11) almost LIVED on those Teething Tablets! I didn’t even know WHEN ds #2 was getting any teeth other than his diaper was different.

Hang in there…after the first several teeth, (for us after the first 9 months), teething was much easier than the FIRST 9 months.

  25. Tylenol never worked for my kids, but baby motrin was a godsend! Also, we found the teething tablets were definitely the way to go and that if we gave them on a regular basis (like every 2ish hours), they worked better.

    (((hugs))) teeth are NO fun!

  26. Thanks for the teething review. My H has been drooling like a mad man for the past few weeks, but we haven’t hit full on teething yet.

As for patterns, my favorite that I’ve made would be Daisy: http://www.ravelry.com/patterns/library/daisy or the Baby Yoda Sweater: http://www.ravelry.com/patterns/library/baby-yoda-sweater.
My favorite that I haven’t made yet would be the Baby Bobbi Bear: http://www.ravelry.com/patterns/library/baby-bobbi-bear.

    Congrats on the Bootaversary!!

  27. Favorite DK pattern would have to be http://www.ravelry.com/patterns/library/forest-canopy-shawl
This would be absolutely gorgeous in your kettled dyed dk yarns!

My nephew is teething right now (8 months old) and Tylenol seems to work the best although they have tried other things like the icy teething rings, etc.

  28. Congrats on the Booty Club Anniversary!

As for pattern Recs, I’d definitely second Daisy. I also really love the Tuscany Shawl from No Sheep for You (http://www.ravelry.com/patterns/library/tuscany). I’ve found that the pattern repeat is fairly easy to memorize, and I love the results. I’ve made 2 of them now, and have plans for a third sometime in the near future :)

  29. I love Red Dwarf socks http://www.ravelry.com/patterns/library/red-dwarf-socks

  30. Thanks for doing the booty club at all! I have loved my first two shipments! They rock!

I have to say I’ve done a lot at worsted and sock weight. The only project I’ve done with DK weight yarn was
    http://www.ravelry.com/projects/spitfiresnc/fuchsia-lace-scarves-ac-74

It’s a scarf pattern I made wider into a wrap. It was a challenging lacey pattern, and after 4 feet I got a little sick of it, as I had to work on it to get it done quickly… But the results (as you can see) are stunning.
